Love For Greta

UPDATE from Greta: The fundraiser has been a thumping success. It has exceeded all my expectations. … No further donations or spreading of the word are necessary. … I can now go ahead with the surgery, and with my recovery afterwards, with all my focus on my health. … I am deeply loving the atheist community right now. Atheism really came through for me on this one. I am feeling deeply loved and valued by this community right now.

Author, activist, and all-around brilliant writer, Greta Christina, has given so much to our non-theist community. Now, it’s time to give back to her. Greta has been diagnosed with endometrial cancer, and soon will be undergoing surgery. During this time, and her recovery which (will last at the least two months), Greta won’t be able to write or do speaking gigs- which is her source of income.

I’m fortunate enough to have good insurance — but being self-employed means no sick leave or paid time off, and I haven’t yet had time to build up any sort of financial cushion. My financial plans for switching to full-time freelance writing and speaking did not include being sidelined for several weeks with cancer and a death in the family.

If you’re somehow unfamiliar with the greatness that is Greta, read a small chip of her bio, as seen on her website, “Greta Christina has been writing professionally since 1989, on topics including atheism, sexuality and sex-positivity, LGBT issues, politics, culture, and whatever crosses her mind. She is on the speakers’s bureaus of the Secular Student Alliance and the Center for Inquiry. She is editor of the “Best Erotic Comics” anthology series, and of “Paying For It: A Guide by Sex Workers for Their Clients.” Her writing has appeared in multiple magazines and newspapers, including Ms., Penthouse, Chicago Sun-Times, On Our Backs, and Skeptical Inquirer, and numerous anthologies, including “Everything You Know About God Is Wrong” and three volumes of “Best American Erotica.”

How can you help? Pitch in with your dollars, whatever amount you can give. From five to five-hundred, any amount will help. Make one-time donation or subscribe to Greta’s blog, which means an automatic donation of five dollars a month for a year.
